Cinnamon aldehydes in fragrance oils
What is it?
Cinnamaldehyde (CAS 104-55-2) is an organic chemical compound of the aldehyde group, found naturally mainly in cinnamon oil. It is widely used in the food industry (imparting the characteristic cinnamon flavour and aroma), in perfumery products (enriching the fragrance and combining well with other fragrance notes), and in the health industry (studies show possible anti-cancer properties, aiding metabolism by regulating blood pressure and glucose levels). We stress that moderation is key when using this substance.
Why does it stir up so much emotion?
According to the latest CLP EU Regulation 2024/197 – 21 ATP, cinnamon juice is covered by a new classification for human health hazards.
What does this mean for candle manufacturers?
The presence of cinnamaldehyde in the fragrance composition requires labelling of the product as a skin allergen (according to CLP). When used at levels of 0.01% or higher, the substance must be labelled EUH208, indicating a risk of allergic reaction.
All Aspol Scentra fragrance oils containing cinnamaldehyde or other potentially allergenic ingredients are properly labelled with the code EUH208. In the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) , section 2.2 , we list the substances in the finished product that may cause allergic reactions.
